Hemphill High School, Class of 2017, seniors honored

June 5, 2017

Thirty – Seventh (37th!) Senior Luncheon

The tradition of hosting the graduating seniors of Hemphill High School continues. Since 1980 the Methodist Women have provided a luncheon following the last graduation practice each May.   This year the luncheon was held on Wednesday, May 24.   It is a joy to interact with the seniors as they enjoy a last occasion to eat together before they embark on individual future plans.

This year the congregation was invited to participate in congratulating these young people by writing a note or letter to someone selected at random. The cards were collected and with the gift of an FUMC writing pen were presented to each senior at the luncheon individually with good wishes and some hugs.  Thanks to all in the congregation who took part in this effort to identify personally with a senior.

MW President Carole Teagle and Pastor Grant welcomed the class and Kazmine Godwin, one of the scholarship recipients and frequent attendee of FUMC gave the blessing before the meal.

The 74 seniors, their sponsors, senior teachers, and administrators enjoyed a bounty of food, beverages, and desserts. Such is the tradition as several teachers recalled their Senior Luncheon when they graduated from HISD.

Some of the many women who worked to decorate the fellowship hall and prepare the food worked quickly as students arrived. The 2017 senior class was extremely respectful and appreciative of the collective efforts of First United Methodist Church.

A long line of guests wait patiently for doors to open last November.

No matter what time of year it is, a fashion show can be a popular event. It’s fun for the people involved in putting it on, for the models walking the runway, and for everyone who comes to see it, especially if they’re watching friends and family members strolling through the tables.  Even if the models are unknown to the show-goer, a style show is like fitting pieces of a puzzle together. Each model reveals clothing that may reflect new or classic styles, shoes and handbags, jewelry, scarves and other accessories to complete “a look” that guests may want to emulate; a finished look that has all the puzzle pieces in the right place.

A turquoise flowered necklace completes the ensemble.

As most East Texan women love to view fashions in a lovely setting, so do they love to enjoy delicious food as a prelude to a fashion show. The guys do too… don’t forget to buy your sweetie a ticket as a surprise lunch treat!  The luncheon menu will satisfy one and all as there is something for everyone, savory to sweet!  Additionally, over twenty door prizes will be won by lucky guests during “half-time.”  You may be one of the lucky ones who leave holding onto a gold bag filled with a special gift.

These models, Janice Gooch, Leslie Cure, and member Margaret Byers are “captured” enjoying a little down time the day prior to 2015’s premier event.  After chopping broccoli and onions and celery and bell pepper and whatever else was presented, these ladies enjoyed cutting up just a bit. This year promises more of the same… chopping and cutting… decorating and embellishing… cleaning up and gearing up for a fabulous time for the public AND the members.  You DO want to come and be part of a fun-filled day.  Call a friend or two, laughing is always more fun with a pal.

The 24th Annual Style Show and Luncheon will be held on Friday, November 11, 2106.  Doors open at 10:30, Luncheon served at 11:00 and Style Show begins at noon.  Tickets are $15 and are available now at the church or from any Methodist Woman.  Call Donna at 787.2183 for information or to purchase tickets.
