When people join a United Methodist Church, they make specific promises. Among them are to be loyal to Jesus Christ through the church, to do everything possible to strengthen the church’s ministries and to participate faithfully in those ministries with their prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.
A Ministry is something that serves others in some way. Our church engages in numerous activities that can be interpreted as giving service, or care, or aid as well as sharing our faith. A partial list includes: Prayer Shawl Ministry, availability of our church to outside functions serving organizations as: Empty Stocking, Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets and others, as well as participating in community activities National Day of Prayer, etc., involvement with HISD through donations and service, United Christian Services, and the list goes on.
As we do all that is possible to strengthen the ministries of this church, we are reminded these things are a pathway for living a faithful life. It is about sharing the gifts God has given us in a way that significantly impacts the way we live our lives.
Sunday, January 4, 2015 is our congregation’s New Covenant Sunday, a time to renew our covenant with God. In the time between receiving this letter and that date, you are asked to prayerfully search your heart to determine how you will use your spiritual and material gifts to work alongside others to build up this body of Jesus Christ. As we make this important decision we are reminded of the promises we made, and make, each time someone dedicates themselves to the membership of FUMC – to participate faithfully with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. How can your commitment in these areas grow as we grow in covenant together?
As we celebrate this New Covenant commitment we will follow the pattern established by the early church – coming together, enjoying fellowship with a meal prepared totally for you (not a potluck). Please plan to attend these two important events on January 4: Sunday morning worship and the Celebration Luncheon immediately following.
