Gloria presenting Ariel with the UMW Scholarship
The United Methodist Women award a $500 scholarship to a deserving senior from Hemphill High each year. Senior Ariel Vickers received this award at Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 28, 2011.
Ariel graduated Cum Laude with a 94.63 GPA. Her ranking placed her in the 1st Quartile in the 2011 graduating class. Ariel was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in UIL activities since grade school. She was a member of the Little Green Band since middle school and was a twirler in high school. A member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Ariel was a leader in her class. Her extra-curricular activities indicate she possessed determination, perseverance and self-discipline as she was heavily involved while maintaining her excellent grades.
Ariel is an active member of New Hope Baptist Church where she has worked in the VBS programs. She has been a volunteer for Special Olympics and has worked with special needs children.
Teaching herself sign-language in order to communicate with students at Special Olympics is a strong beginning for the career she has chosen. Ariel has been accepted at Stephen F. Austin University planning to study Deaf and Special Education.
Her parents are Linda and Jerry Vickers of Milam. Ariel has one sibling, Cory whom she calls “her inspiration.” Ariel, her mother and brother and best friend, Ashley Corley were in attendance at Worship Services on Sunday, June 12 when she was presented with a Woman’s Devotional Bible inscribed with her name. Standing with Pastor Karen, members of the congregation welcomed her with congratulations and expressions for continued success.
Ariel’s words, “Achieving something great comes with sacrifices and hard work…” found in her scholarship application reveal her expectations for her college experience and her life. UMW congratulates Ariel and extends best wishes for her continued success.
Any student meeting the established criteria and submitting an application is eligible provided a church member is not graduating that year. The UMW scholarship committee reviews all applications and selects the recipient each year.
